Meet Martina, Coffee Break French learner
Tell us who you are, where you live, your nationality and how long you’ve been learning a language with us.
Australia has been my home for more than 3 decades. I was born in Finland, I lived in Sweden for two years in my teens and in Scotland for 5 years in my 20s. I have officially been learning French (Season 2) with Mark and Anna since February 2019. Before that I was listening to the free podcasts (French Season 1). Now I look forward to starting the French Masterclass.
What experience have you had speaking and learning other languages?
Swedish is my mother tongue (Finland is bi-lingual). Finnish was compulsory at school as was English and German. Finnish was spoken around town when I grew up but I always spoke Swedish at home. I moved a lot as a child, and at one point I had the good fortune to study French. It was love at first sight, but unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity to study as much French as I would have liked. I also did Latin for one year in high school, but all I can remember is two sentences! At the moment I’m also listening to Coffee Break Spanish (Season 1) to prepare for the Camino de Santiago. I want to be able to communicate in Spanish at least a little. But French is my big passion!
What are your favourite memories of learning a language?
I was only able to communicate in the present tense in French for the longest time, so when I learned to talk about the past and the future I was pretty excited! (Very excited actually!!)
Where would your ideal coffee break be, and with whom?
I would like to explore different parts of France by hiking, and I would love to easily have intelligent conversations with the locals as I enjoy my café crème at a cosy café somewhere in a village in France.
What’s the best language-learning tip you have found works for you?
I do a little every day! I try not just to think about how much I still “have” to learn, I make a habit of noticing how far I have come.
