Lesson 33 – Show Time Spanish

In lesson 33 it’s destination Mexico as Mark is joined by Juan from México D.F. Juan introduces Mark to the geography and some of the tourist attractions of Mexico. Language concepts included the use of soler, the difference between amable and amigable, and a reminder of the fact that “another” is otro/otra in Spanish – and not un otro / una otra…

  1. La Paz is the highest administrative capital in the world. Quito, Ecuador is the highest legal capital in the world. Juan me cae bien. Tengo pendiente ver las ruinas Aztecas y Mayas.

  4. As you say in the podcast, most of the grammar has been covered now, the verbs, and their tenses etc. What about doing some literature study? I read bilingual books, and find them very useful, but there are often figurative expressions that don’t translate. And there are some beautiful poetic expressions. I know there are copyright issues, but older works are copyright free, I think?
I also wanted to ask about “tal” – I don’t see it used much in these podcasts except in expressions such as que tal, tal vez etc. Is it used as much as “such” is in English? Es correcto decir es tal grande libro! por ejemplo for such a big book.

  5. I’ve been waiting for a Mexican guest for some time, as I live in the U.S. and have a great interest in Mexican variations. I really hope that you have Juan on for at least another episode or two, and would love it if you could cover some pronunciation tips, alphabet variances, slang, etc. that are most common in Mexico. Thank you, and keep up the great job.

  7. Sobre la pregunta de Adam Pollard… Creo que usaria la palabra tan en la oracion. Por ejemplo: El libro es tan grande. O podria decir El libro es bastante grande. Pero yo soy solo un estudiante de espanol.

  8. Me referia a la palabra “tal” no “tan”, asi que me gustaria saber si es casi igual a “such” por ejemplo se puede decir “tal manera de hablar” por “Such a way to speak!” o “el vive tal distancia de la tienda tendria conducir alli para comprar cualquiera cosa.”

  9. En el caso de ‘tal manera de hablar,’ es correcto el uso de ‘tal’ como en ‘such a way of speak(ing?).’ En el segundo ejemplo sería más bien: ‘viviendo [since he lives; if he lived; knowing the fact that he lives] a tal distancia de la tienda, (él) tendría que conducir hasta allá para comprar cualquier cosa’ ó ‘ya que [since] (él) vive a tal distancia de la tienda, tendría que conducir hasta allá para comprar cualquier cosa.

  10. Me alegro que oír un voz mexicano. Vivo en los Estados Unidos y me mudaré a México en enero para enseñar inglés. Ojalá todos en México hablen tan claro como Juan.
