Season 2 – Lesson 26 – Coffee Break Spanish

One of the best ways to make progress in a language is to use the language with native speakers and to check your understanding by asking them for feedback. In lesson 26 you’ll put what you’ve been learning recently into practice by asking ¿Lo he dicho bien? and other phrases using the perfect tense. Please note that lesson 26 of Season 2 was originally known as lesson 226 of Coffee Break Spanish. We have renumbered the lessons of each season as lessons 1-40 to make things more simple for our listeners.

  1. Hello and thanks for the great lessons! Would appreciate if Mark or any of the readers could point to a more extensive discussion on the use of perfect tense. I was doing a online test in Spanish and using perfect tense with ayer and even esta mañana was marked as a mistake with an explanation that whenever one is certain about the time – whether is was last week or last year, one should use the preterite. Also, some other instructions I found online seemed to say that perfect tense is used primarily when time of the action isn’t precisely pointed out or known. Also, one of them instructed that when there is ‘Ya’ one should use preterite, and without Ya the perfect tense is correct. I understand that there may be differences across the Spanish speaking world or that things are simply much more complex, but I would love to get deeper into the problem, if someone could recommend a good and reliable article. Thanks a lot!
