What you'll learn
Over the course of the month, we'll guide you step by step through 5 lessons covering various uses of the subjunctive in French:
- Bien que: learn how to use the subjunctive after bien que to express contrast and opposition, so you can say what happens despite a difficulty or unexpected situation with confidence and nuance. (Bien qu’il fasse froid, nous sortons. Although it is cold, we are going out.)
- Pour que: discover how to use the subjunctive after pour que to express purpose and intention, allowing you to explain why you do something and what result you want to achieve. (Je parle lentement pour que tu comprennes. I speak slowly so that you understand.)
- Il faut que: master the subjunctive with il faut que to express necessity and obligation, so you can clearly say what must be done in everyday and professional situations. (Il faut que nous partions maintenant. We must leave now.)
- Jusqu’à ce que: understand how to use the subjunctive after jusqu’à ce que to talk about actions that continue up to a certain point, helping you describe time limits and ongoing situations more naturally. (Je resterai ici jusqu’à ce que tu arrives. I will stay here until you arrive.)
- Vouloir que: learn how to use the subjunctive after vouloir que to express wishes and desires about other people’s actions, so you can communicate expectations, preferences, and intentions more effectively. (Je veux que tu viennes. I want you to come.)

Previous Masterclass student?
Have you taken part in a previous Coffee Break 6-month Masterclass? If so, please be aware that the content of the French Subjunctive Masterclass is based on the French Subjunctive Module from the previous version of the course. While we have added some new activities and restructured the presentation of the course, the main lessons are the same. In 2026 we're publishing month-long Masterclasses on single topics, to make the courses as accessible and flexible as possible for learners around the world.
If you have previously taken part in our 6-month Masterclass, we would suggest that you do not buy the French Subjunctive Masterclass, unless you wish to revisit this content and benefit from tutor feedback as you work through it.
Is the course right for me?
The Coffee Break French Subjunctive Masterclass is perfect if:
- You're at an intermediate or advanced level
- You've completed Coffee Break French Levels 1-2
- You've completed or are working through Coffee Break French Level 3, or a similar course elsewhere
- You want to build your confidence using the subjunctive in conversations
- You enjoy learning in short, structured sessions.

The Subjunctive Masterclass FAQ
When does the Masterclass start?
The Coffee Break French Subjunctive Masterclass runs from 1st March until 31st March. Of course, we understand that you may have commitments which mean that you are not be able to take each lesson on the day it's released. However, once they're released, the lessons will be available to you for as long as you need them. Please note that registration will close as soon as the class reaches capacity, or by 4th March, and you will not be able to sign up again until the next time we open the course for registration.
How does the membership work?
When you pay for the Masterclass we'll create your account in the Coffee Break Academy and, as each lesson becomes available, you'll be able to access the audio files, text documents and video reviews within our platform. It's there that you'll do your homework tasks and receive feedback from the Masterclass tutors. You'll also have access to all the materials after the Masterclass ends. However, please note that after March 2026 we will no longer be actively monitoring the comments and discussion areas in this course.
Who is the Masterclass for?
We’ve developed the Masterclass specifically for learners who are at an intermediate level. You should already have completed at least Levels 1 and 2 of Coffee Break French (or an equivalent intermediate course). The Masterclass is also perfect for learners who have completed, or are working on, Coffee Break French Level 3.
Do I get access to all the materials at once?
No. The materials are "dripped out" over the course of the month. Lessons are published every few days, with five main lessons and additional activities, discussions, reviews, checklists and module tests over the month. Our experience is that this gradual release of the materials will help you keep on top of the course and avoid being overwhelmed.
I thought the Masterclass was a 6-month course. Is this different?
We have previously sold the Masterclass as a 6-month course featuring six separate modules on different aspects of the language. This year we are running individual Masterclasses, based on the original content, to make the courses as accessible as possible. If you have already completed the 6-month course, you should not sign up for the Subjunctive Masterclass.
What happens after I pay?
As soon as you sign up you'll receive a confirmation email and this will include some further information about the course and a link to the Coffee Break Academy login page. Before 1st September, we'll activate the Orientation Module for you in the Academy. The lessons will be made available on each publication day and you can work through them at your own pace.
