Episode 5 – Season 4 – Coffee Break Spanish

In this episode of our advanced Spanish course we join Rory who is writing an email to María, telling her of the latest goings on in Consuelo’s hotel. As usual the episode is rich in idiomatic expressions and complex grammatical points and Mark and Carmen are on hand to discuss the language used.

  1. I’m not sure where to pose grammatical uncertainty so I figured I’d leave it as a comment! I have 2 quick grammar questions about this episode.
    1. Rory says, “Tengo muchas ganas de verle.” Why doesn’t he say “Tengo muchas ganas de verlo”? Is it just leísmo or is Alejandro an indirect object here?
    2. When Rory asks María to go to the open-air cinema with him he adds, “¡Hace tanto calor que me apetece estar en la calle cuando ya se ha ido el sol!” Why isn’t there a subjunctive here? It seems like it should be “cuando haya ido el sol” because it’s a future after cuando so technically we don’t know if the sun really will go down that night (or however you can make sense of when to use the subjunctive!). Does it have something to do with the “ya”?
Espero que me puedan contestar estas preguntas. Muchísimas gracias a Mark, a Carmen y a todos los trabajadores de Coffee Break Spanish
