  1. Maybe you should mention that “Hallo” and “Tschüß” are not the formal and polite ways to say hello and goodbye in German. Some people who care for good manners wouldn’t be too delighted to be greeted with these rather colloquial phrases.

    • These phrases are used in every day situations, such as when shopping. I recently worked in Germany and was greeted every time at the shop with Hallo.

I think any German who realises that a foreigner is making an attempt to speak their language will be more pleased to hear phrases which approximately mean “hello” and “goodbye” than worry about whether they’re polite or not. OML courses aim to teach the easiest language possible, and Tschüß is much easier for learners than Auf Wiedersehen.
